October Monthly Meeting
Talk by David Ruiz - MADRID ORIGINAL
“Spanish Connection: The Duke of Wellington in Spanish History and Art History”
Date: Tuesday, 20 October
Time: 10:45 - 13:00
Following David Ruiz’s fascinating talk at our May Monthly Meeting, “Citizen Kane and Spain: William Randolph Hearst’s Passionate Spanish Conquests,” we are delighted to welcome David Ruiz from Madrid Original back for another exploration of the connections between Spain and Britain.
This time, David will take us into the world of the Duke of Wellington, a figure whose connection with Spain went far beyond the battlefield. Wellington was a highly honoured figure in both Britain and Spain. In Spain, he was honoured as the “Libertador de España”, created Duke of Ciudad Rodrigo, and awarded the prestigious Order of the Golden Fleece by the Spanish Crown.
David will explore Wellington’s remarkable connection with Spain through its history and art, bringing together the royal, historical and artistic dimensions of this prominent British figure in Spain.
Returning to the historic Ateneo de Madrid, where David gave his May presentation, we will once again have the opportunity to enjoy this beautiful and fascinating setting. The Ateneo, founded in the early 19th century, is a hidden treasure in the heart of Madrid, renowned for its stunning architecture and academic atmosphere.
We will begin with coffee and conversation at the café downstairs before continuing to the Úbeda Conference Room for David’s talk and Q&A.
